Keeping Roadie Healthy With Wellness

This post is sponsored by Wellness CORE natural pet food. While I was compensated to share my experience with the products, all thoughts and opinions remain my own. I hope you enjoy the collection of pet pictures my honest review!

Fur-children are a thing, right?

Those of you who have been reading for a while know that Scott and I became “parents” a long time ago, thanks to this extremely loving and loyal Rhodesian Ridgeback mix named Roadie who entered our lives eight years ago.

We already had two kitties in our condo in Florida, so we weren’t planning on adding any more furballs into the mix. But, we found Roadie as a stray who needed treatment for heartworms, and after weeks of being unsuccessful in finding his owners, we kept him. And I’m so, so glad that we did because I couldn’t picture our little family without him in it.

Roadie fit right in and got along with everyone right off the bat. Scott and I continuously laugh at his mannerisms, and they only get stronger the older he gets. We’re pretty sure that he thinks he’s a human or a cat, but we’re not quite sure which.

He snuggles with all of us, including our 3-month-old, Skyler, and absolutely loves being around people and included in daily whereabouts. I’ve always loved him like a family member, and I’m admittedly one of those people who feels bad being out when our dog is at home waiting for us to come back to hang. It’s ridiculous but true.

Since he became a part of the family back in the early days of 2011, I wanted to put all of our pets on the same brand of food. I was looking for a high-quality brand that offered good nutritional content, but I didn’t want that choice to break our wallets, either.

After dealing with sensitive stomachs and fails on all three pets, I finally got them all happy and on a combination of Wellness wet and dry food. They’ve been on it for years, and I haven’t strayed from it since.

I love Wellness because that is exactly what they promote — healthy and natural food for pets. Wellness is committed to creating food that provides nourishment, well being and taste, and is honest about what ingredients go into foods as well as how it’s made.

So, when I got the opportunity to see if Roadie would like the Wellness CORE RawRev line, I raised my hand and his paws high. CORE RawRev is a protein-rich diet and is balanced to fit a modern dog’s domestic lifestyle.

As a backstory, I have always been hesitant for Roadie to try anything new. But, he’s been on Wellness since he was about a year old, so I was excited for him to give Wellness CORE a go.

A little over a month ago, however, we noticed that Roadie wasn’t acting like himself. He wasn’t eating much and didn’t feel like going outside. I thought his behavioral changes had to do with everything he was going through with bringing a new baby into our home, but it ended up being more.

After getting bloodwork taken and being put on a special diet of prescription dog food mixed with plain chicken and rice, the vet confirmed that he had an intestinal disease called Giardia. We put him on meds for a week and, thankfully, he quickly turned back into the old Roadie we know and love so much!

Knowing that I didn’t want to keep him on the prescription food, I figured this would be a great time to reintroduce him to Wellness, but this time to the CORE RawRev line.

A Wellness dog is #NotAWolf — who craves protein but is domesticated with unique nutritional needs based on their lifestyle. The CORE RawRev dog food is a delicious combination of high-protein kibble and 100% pure freeze-dried raw meat. There is a variety of different products and flavors including treats and toppers that are made with ingredients like real beef, lamb, turkey, and salmon.

I was very intrigued when I opened the package to see real meat in the kibble. (I was sent a few bags of the Turkey flavor.)

Being a meat lover who literally drools when we cook it, I knew that Roadie would take to the addition pretty quickly. Wellness sent me a few packages of 100% Freeze Dried Treats as well, which look similar to the pieces found in the kibble. Naturally, Roadie inhales all of it when given the opportunity. He’s got to keep up that energy for the dog park, right?

While we love our time outside with Roadie and adventures through the park, he is just as much a homebody who wants to relax and snuggle with the rest of us. He’s the definition of #NotAWolf who just wants to hang out and be loved on.

When we first adopted him, we bought him a dog bed and didn’t allow him on the couch or on our bed. Yeah … that lasted for a few weeks. Then we got the eyes.

Since Skyler arrived, he’s been extra lovey and it isn’t unusual to find him curled up on his rocking chair while Skyler sleeps in his crib. I used to think he was just waiting for Scott to come home, but I think he’s just being a great big brother.

We celebrated #NationalBestFriendsDay this month and this guy certainly qualifies as mine. He hangs with me all day long and would wander the streets with me to explore every inch of our neighborhood if I took him.

We’re very similar when it comes to activity level. We like to lay low in the mornings, lounge on the couch (well, I’m watching Skyler and enjoying my morning cup of coffee), and get some activity in before lunch. I can tell that his favorite walk of the day is right before I put Skyler to bed. I wear him in a carrier and take them both around the neighborhood for about twenty minutes or so for a “wind down” walk. He always gets the biggest smile on his face and knows exactly where we are going when I put the baby carrier on!

Roadie is a loyal member of our family, so I only want what is best for him on the food front. I’ve denied the opportunity to review a few other brands of dog food for this reason, so it was a big day when I allowed something new into our home and his dog bowl.

So far he has been on CORE RawRev for a month and loves it. I used to have to call him into the kitchen and talk him into eating his dry food, and now he eats it soon after I scoop it and occasionally licks the bowl clean. I think he really likes the addition of the freeze-dried meat!

It feels good knowing that Roadie is on a great brand that makes his health a priority, and I’m looking forward to seeing how he continues to do down the road.

I’ve teamed up with Wellness to continue sharing our experience with their products over the summer and fall, so keep a lookout for updates and more adorable pictures of Roadie throughout the journey!

Also, I’d love to hear about your dogs …

Questions of the Day

• Does he/she like to lounge, get outside and be active, or a mixture of both?

• Do you have him/her on dry food, wet food, or a mixture of both?

Roadie has always loved activities. I used to take him running on an almost daily basis when we lived really close to a trail in the Metro Detroit area. It was easy to take him around a quick loop if it was hot and drop him back off inside to cool off with water. Doing that is a little harder these days with four flights of stairs, and while we don’t know his actual age (he was a stray!), we think he is about 9 years old. I don’t take him running anymore, but I’ll set out on a short jog every once in a while. Long walks through the park are his favorite!

Roadie used to just get dry food, but since the cats get wet food, he used to get jealous. I now give him a scoop and a half of dry food twice a day and top each serving with a taste of wet food. He loves the combination!
